Zakk Wylde

Stringmachine

Anybody out there who can tell me why Zakk treads his strings over the stop bar? Seen it on lots of pictures of Zakk's guitar's, but noone else seems to do it.
Anyone??

Re: Zakk Wylde

Originally, he did it because when he bought the Grail it was already strung that way. But he says that since then he's learned that it cuts down on string breakage.

Yup. The reason it cuts down on breakage is the string is at less of a severe angle going over the bridge.

I believe Billy Gibbons may string up like this as well.

Re: Zakk Wylde

When I saw that Zakk did this and said that it increased sustain I tried it and didn't like it at all. I seemed to lose tuning stability for some reason and there was no noticeable gain in sustain. I don't break strings as it is so I noticed no change there.

Re: Zakk Wylde

it's to keep down string breakage...several people do this, and no matter what else you might hear, it DOES NOT increase sustain...in fact it will give you less. The biggest reason Billy G does it, is because he playe slide whilepicking behind the bridge, and he says stringing it like that works better for him.

Re: Zakk Wylde

i tune one of my guitars this way (the one i keep at school) because it really cuts down on string breakage. i break strings about every 3 weeks normally, but with em strung up this way, it lasts 2 months or more (which isnt too good because by then the strings are extremely dead, but oh well im cheap)

Re: Zakk Wylde

I think it also makes the strings a little more slinky.

Re: Zakk Wylde

I don't know about the sustain thing or even string breakage yet. I just strung my guitar up like this and I raised the tail piece quite a bit. I felt that the angle was WAY too severe and that my guitar was not staying in tune or even intoned, and I was breaking strings quite a bit too. So I wrapped the strings around AND raised the tail piece to where the strings are almost level. (theyr'e almost on a strait line from the tail piece, to the bridge, to the nut, to the tuners) Tuned up. Intonated up. My guitar appears to stay in tune TONS better than it did and the intonation seems much more precise. I was also having issues with open chords sounding "off" due to the angle of the strings in relation to the nut and tuners I think, and that has improved too. One other thing I like about it is that I have more room to rest my palm on my bridge when I'm palm muting. I just feels better. I do agree that the strings do feel a bit looser this way too, but not enough to make me uncomfortable.

Re: Zakk Wylde

Thanks for answering my question, everybody.
I've tried it myself, and it seems to me that it is easier to bend the strings (I use 10-52's). Have no trouble with string breakage so don't know about that, and I can't say I've noticed any difference in sustain, though.
Anyway, thanks again!

Re: Zakk Wylde

oh i almost forgot, it also makes that rake thing behind the bridge sound much much much more audible. when you rake the strings up from high to low in the space between the tune-o-matic and the stopbar

Re: Zakk Wylde

you guys all seem to have missed the main reason why top wrapping is done...so i drew this AMAZING super high quality diagram to show you...
