Celestion Vintage 30 vs Greenback vs G12-T75

Re: Celestion Vintage 30 vs Greenback vs G12-T75

vintage 30s are great speakers imho, they are usually rated around 65 watts and have a classic sound.
the greenbacks are usually 25 watts and break up easily. greenbacks were used heavily in the 70s/80s.
12t75 are the standard speakers in marshall 1960 cabinets. they are often known for not being as mid friendly as the others. more bass and treble.

Thanks. Which are middier, have better lows, have better highs?

Re: Celestion Vintage 30 vs Greenback vs G12-T75

The vintage 30's have a pronounced midrange boost. Depending on the cab they have a deep bottom end. They suit amps with scooped mids like Rectos very well.
Greenbacks have a smoother sound. Less mids and chimy high's. They suit midrangy amps like marshall's. They also have a fast breakup that just sounds very natural and musical. I like em!!!
G12T75's sound very harsh and focused to me. Never liked them.

Another good one is the classic lead 80. Voiced alot like the Greenback but able to handle more power.

you should consider emi wizards or celestion g12h30's too

good lows, complex mids, good highs, loud as all hell

Re: Celestion Vintage 30 vs Greenback vs G12-T75

I have tried all 3 of those with different amps. For Marshall tone with nice fat mids, I like the Greenbacks. The v30 seems like a good overall speaker. The GT75 does not do it for me. I like more mids. I think it sounds pretty good in an open back combo amp... but not for British style tone.

I own the V30 and G12t-75. I like then both and they have their purposes. The V30 has much mor emid range. Good highs as well. Great for dark amps or when you want a classic sound with a lot of mid range. Bass is good on them but not boomy.
The G12t-75 has the mids pulled back, the bass is deep and the highs are a little fuzzy on top. Great for 80's metal and when you have too much honk in you sound. It will do many classic british tones well.

I mix them often for great bass, midrange, and highs.

I also have the g12h as well. Bass is like the g12t-75 but with more low mids. The highs are softer as well. It is great to mix with the v30.

The G12T75 isn't so great in a 4x12, IMHO. It's thin and brittle, by comparison to the others, with harsher highs. It might work okay with alot of processing, due to it's crispness and lack midrange complexity?

In a 2x12 it works a little better, because in a 4x12, you have less midrange compared to a 2x12, due to phase cancellation things that happen inside of a 4x12 cab.

The GB is the classic 4x12 speaker, and it has an aggressive attack without harshness. It's great for bluesy sting and sing lead work due to it's attack, with a fullness in the tone as the notes sustian, and it gives a nice crunch without brittleness for power chords.

I've gone through the speaker experimentation thing a few times and I always come back to the Vintage 30. It's simply the best overall, IMHO. It's the warmest and thickest of those listed by my experiance. It's so smooth behind an overdriven tube amp. The lows remain tight and you can get just enough high end sparkle in a band situation. I've never understood reports of it pushing harsh highs. I don't have that problem. With a strat you can get nice tight Hendrixy rythimic chops. It works behind classic amps and works behind high gain amps too.

It seems that combining the V30 with other speakers, particularly the G12H30, really works great.
