  • the best solid state amps

Yeah I know most of you hate SS but what are some of the most versitle and best sounding SS heads? I looking more towards cleans and higher gain stuff, I really don't use the in between setting much...

I liked my Peavey Envoy. Though again I haven't played it in 2 years! But still... them Peavey transtube series sound nothing like valves but sound good for the money I found.

I like Randalls a lot, too.

Everytime these threads come up, I have to through a vote in for Peavey transtube solid state. I have a few tubes heads and combos, and the Peavey solid state I have (you've got to keep at least one) does pretty well right next to the tube stuff. Always a pleasure to plug into.

Re: the best solid state amps

Great timing for this kind of thread.
I have been looking for a small amp to have in my room, just practice and maybe a jam or two, problem i'm a tubeholic trying to find the perfect A Class was hard work, and the choices here in Portugal are close to none.
'till one day i tried a Tech 21 Trademark 30 and man does that thing rocks!
I only use clean sounds or overdrive and I don't like the hi gain settings on this thing, but it doesn't hurt to try it for yourself.
There's not a single tube on this little guy, and he sounds amazing, gets really really close to a cranked tube amp, best cleans i've ever heard on an SS amp.
Suits my style of playing very well, but it may not do it for you, and if you want to get blown away just try it with a 2x12 Cab...
I really have got to post my new rig here, with samples.

+1. Also Sunn bass, which can be used for guitar.

For high gain SS, nothing beats Randall, the Peavey XXL is supposed to be awesome but I haven't used one. I know the Randall T2 sounds beyond ****ing brutal. The guy Kataklysm has one and it totally destroyed the amps the other guys used (Triple recs and VHTs). The T2 is the tube preamp one, but still...

Yeah, I was looking into those. Do you have one? is it your main amp?

I have a really old crate combo amp from the late 70's....the clean on it is unbelievable and it's got a line out for a speaker cab. Completely analog before they moved to the digital solid state combos.
