  • Gonna have to use a Marshall MG30 at a gig... EEK!

Well, not me, but the guitar player in my band. I play bass on this one.

We're going to a small town, and the gig is being produced by ourselves and that amp is the only thing in town we could get for this saturday.

It's a medium sized pub (150-200 people tops) there will be a small PA and decent speakers,
and we'll carry good mics and everything and we'll have our trusty soundman who's one more with the band, but well... that's gonna be interesting to say the least.

I'll go straight into the mixer with a Behringer bass amp modeler pedal that's actually quite good.
Or maybe not that much, but the bass sits tightly in the mix and it's such a simple rig that I don't care.

But I'm concerned my buddy just won't sound too good.

How should I EQ a cheapo amp like that?

Since it's so tiny and it's gonna be miced, I'm thinking of cranking the bass (if it doesn't muddify everything of course), generous mids, keeping the highs in check and let the soundman filter the bass from the guitar if needed. This guy uses an old Boss ME30 for all his sounds.

It's not like a 10 inch speaker from a practice amp is gonna eat all the bass in the mix, right?

Just sharing the insanity with y'all.
It's not like I'm really worried, I've never managed not to get a usable sound out of any piece of gear I've been given.
But I just think this is funny.

Why not the ME30 to the board?

We tried that one once. Guitar cab simulation enabled. Sounded like a DS1 going straight into the board. We messed with the EQ for 15 minutes and nothing worked...

      I think it's a first-gen cab simulation, it's just terrible.

Oh well. Do what ya gotta do. The amp you have sounds better than the one thats not at the gig anyway. Rock out and dont worry about it. and all that kinda stuff.

Mic from the back if it's an open cab.

In my experience with MG's, spiking the bass will not add warmth, fullness, or any other pleansant thing (usually anyways). I've always kept a pretty even EQ and just made small adjustments at the board to counter the amps frustrating eq section.

Any chance he's using a preamp? I've gotten really good sounds from a tube stomp box going to one. And even a cheap overdrive pedal can sometimes come through better than its onboard distortion. A tubulator worked ok for quite a while for me.

I would connect the MG30 to a proper speaker/cab. the improvement is outstanding.
