  • Marshall Amp Sound; Demystified here

Would you say that the Marshall sound is really just about the type of tubes and speakers used, but cranked?

    Nope.
You get 3 preamp tubes in a lot of mid-gainamplifiers, and they all have 3 similar gain stages (plus standard CF and PI). But they sound different.

Vox, Laney, Peavey don't sound like Marshall, even at preamp out.

It's not much of science these days though.
You can make a Marshall clone from Ceriatone schematics even if you don't know anything about electronics for like $100.
You would only have to get a decent transformers.
I reckon it can't be over $300 with knobs and stickers

The secret is in couple of condensers at certain places

I think it's in every single part of the amp (except the chassis, preamp tubes, head enclosure and knobs).

        Besides the given-power, tubes, speakers,
the main difference is in the tone stacks:

there's a lot more involved in all of this than most people think.

nothing is "just" anything...it simply isn't that simple.

Very true. I know of Mr Hackman who was involved in Diezel amps development back in the time and now is developing Scorpions axeman Matthias Jabs' custom-built Mastertone amps (superb stuff I can say) and also made my rackmount EL34 beast. A little change in the simplest component can cause drastic changes on tone. Even the placement of components, cables length and routing are important, much more than I thought before...

We are we so worried about this all of a sudden?

You wanna know what one sounds like - play one. They aren't exactly rare.

The older Marshalls, yeah to an extent.
The JVMs which is highly based around it's preamp gain.......uhh, not so much.
The JVM was designed for the modern rock/metal guitarist who needs the headroom of a 100 watt amp, a totally different application to the old Plexis that were 100 watts out of necessity of the poor PA systems of the time.
The JVM is designed to sound tight and focused with headroom to spare at fairly reasonable volumes with all that gain, where the Plexis were about being super damn loud and you had to crank it to get that gain, which you don't on a JVM.
