  • Speaker choices

So I'm thinking of updating the speaker in my Marshall 1912 1x12.
I think I've got it down to two contenders.
The celestion G12H or the eminence swamp thing.
On paper both seem to have similar descriptions, both using words like thick, chunky or syrupy. Sounds right up my street.
The swamp thing is slightly more sensitive (102 v100 db/W) and also slightly cheaper.
    Hmm, choices.

    Any other suggestions?

Speaker selection is largely based on the amp it will be used with.
    So.....what amp?

get a wizard if you want a cheaper gh12h30

I've never tried the swamp in a 1x12, or in any open back cab, i dunno if yours is, but by themselves in closed back they're kinda muddy

May wanna check out the cannabis rex, too. It's a lot warmer than the wizard or g12h but still articulate so it may round out some of the mesa-ness

The cab is closed back, and although I'm after a thicker, warmer sound, taking the risk too far towards muddy I don't want to take.

The Wizard looks interesting, by the description it does seem to be more of a clone of the celstion.

The Wizard is a great speaker.
Also look into the Hellatone 30, WGS Reaper 30 and WGS Reaper 50.

With all due respect to the guy who called the Swamp Thang muddy in a 112 setup, I couldn't disagree more. I use it in my 6505 112 combo and it sounds GREAT. It's so thick and powerful that it can keep up with my Krank 412. I think it sounds better in only a 112 or 212 configuration simply because of how thick and bassy it can be. It was a little stiff sounding when I first got it, like all speakers are, but once I broke it in a little I knew I made the right choice.

I put a Wizard in a Classic 30 and it ROCKED, highly recommend that speaker.

Hmm, now I'm not sure again.
It's the problem with speakers, you really can't try before you buy (bit like pickups).
May have to go search for some clips.

Hm... Marshall 1912 is one of the more expensive 1x12 cabs. Is it possible that the speaker is kinda bad?

Thing about the 1912 is the speaker seems to be a bit of a one off.
Celestion G12B... Can't find out much about it.

Seems to sound pretty good, the cab is louder than my 2x12, possibly a tad harsher in the tone.

Build wise it's pretty standard marshall. Solid enough, but nothing special.

Back to speaker choice. Checked out the eminence web site clips, as ever not great clips but the swamp thing is winning so far. The wizard is just a tad to brighter than I want.
