  • Blown amp?? HELP.

So, last night I just started playing and I heard a "pop" and my amp went dead. Not totally, though I can still hear a very faint sizzle noise when I play a note.

All the tubes seem to be fine.

    What happened?

Is this going to be an expensive repair or something obvious that maybe I can fix myself?

More than likely a power supply problem..Bad diode maybe? Pretty common..

Any ideas how much a repair might cost? Just ballpark figures are fine. First repair I've needed so I don't have a clue.

mine made a loud pop and howl
it was a loose tube =the pop
cracked solder joint on tube socket =the howl

              Re: Blown amp?? HELP.

My tubes are solid, not loose. No howl, just a barely audible fizz when I hit the strings, otherwise no sound.

                  Re: Blown amp?? HELP.

So after my last post I noticed another thread in here by B2D ("My Boogie pooped out on me"). He seems to have had the very same problem. All of his tube were glowing normally so he thought they were ok, but several forum members recommended he check his tubes anyway. He took a good 12 AX7 out of his Marshall and found that his PI tube, I believe, was the culprit.

That was very interesting to me, so I decided to check mine. Sure enough, the PI was bad. All is well now. What a relief.

But this was a good lesson. I learned that just because the tubes are glowing like normal and there is no evidence of microphonics from tapping on them, there still can be a bad tube causing problems.

Thanks to all for your suggestions and those that posted ideas on B2D's thread.

And thanks to ZZ for the offer. It looks like I'm up and running and won't need to take you up on it though. I'll PM you.
