Any info on Ruby 12AX7HG+?

Re: Any info on Ruby 12AX7HG+?

I believe they are just JJ 12ax7/ECC83s, graded for high gain and low microphonics.

Re: Any info on Ruby 12AX7HG+?

could be...hard to tell from Ruby's website.

either way, high gain, low microphonics.

Re: Any info on Ruby 12AX7HG+?

I guess they are supposed to be better than Penta Labs in regard to microphonics.

Re: Any info on Ruby 12AX7HG+?

They're probably a pretty good tube, just depends on which position you're putting it in and if you'll like the sound if it in that position - much like any tube.

Re: Any info on Ruby 12AX7HG+?

Pretty sure they are selected chinese, same as the Penta... maybe to higher standards for gain and noise.

Re: Any info on Ruby 12AX7HG+?

Ok...I'm a Ruby dealer so maybe I can clear this up.

HG = high grade (low noise & microphonics) for use in all stages of mid and low gain amps and all but the first stage in high gain amps.

HG+ = high grade plus (extremely low noise & microphonics) for use in the first stage in high gain amps.

There are actually 2 Ruby 12AX7s...they dropped the JJs from their present lineup.

12AX7AC5: 5th generation Chinese. The "standard" Chinese 12AX7 that almost every tube supplier sells. Short plates with a division shield between them. Tone: strong highs and mids with a slightly subdued bass character that can make some amps feel tighter...it depends on the amp and the player's touch. A great tube for a high gain amp or a lower gain amp that needs a little more bite.

12AX7AC7: 7th generation Chinese. An attempt to make a more NOS style tube. Longer plates than the AC5 but not nearly as long as a Sovtek LPS. No division shield between the plates. Tone: strong highs and fuller mids than an AC5 with a full, round bass character...a bit fuller than a TungSol reissue. Not so great in the first stage of a high gain amp but it does work well in later stages for a little more warmth. Sounds great in old Fenders but terrible in Rivera era Fenders.

Most amps typically end up with a mixture of the two types.

I sell a lot of both (in HG & HG+) and have never had an issue with them failing...a lot more than I can say for the TungSols.

Re: Any info on Ruby 12AX7HG+?

Thank you Glassman. That is a lot of help! I'm thinking about putting 2 AC5 HG in my 6505+ lead channel stages and a AC5 HG+ in V1 now.

Do you sell tubes individually? Or just in the amps you make? I couldn't find anything about that on your site.

You should sell tubes like Doug, KCA, or Tube Depot if you don't already. It would be awesome because you're decently close to me!
Plus, from a marketing standpoint GlassMan just sounds perfect in regard to the tube business. It would kick some ANOS! See what I did there? Ha!

Re: Any info on Ruby 12AX7HG+?

The AC5's should work well in your 6505+.

I do sell tubes (walk ins and with repairs) but I will be totally honest with you...I don't make very much selling tubes; I have to be competitive, price-wise with the online stores. Plus, selling tubes (answering the phone, boxing orders, etc) would seriously cut into my repair/build time and right now I can't afford to take the focus off that.
