  • Dirt box placement...

How do you like to run your gain pedals? When combining, and why?

Low gain into High? to add more distortion or High gain into Low for more volume?

I'm hoping I have a situation where I won't combine (that much) anymore... and then keep my FB3 clean boost at the end of the (Gain) chain.
Of course, There is always the situation where everything is on! LOL

My chain goes Guitar- Fuzz- Filter- Compression- Chorus- Delay.

If I run multiple gain pedals I usually put the pedal with the lowest gain setting first and the higher gains after that. I've tried the other way around and never really liked the results.

        I have kinda a weird set up...but there's a reason behind it.

        Tuner--->Comp--->Distortion--->Overdrive--->Spring Reverb w/ slapback delay---->Plate Reverb---->Distortion (duplicate of the 1st one)----Octave Fuzz---->Fuzz----Different Fuzz--->Tremolo.

The two drive pedals before the verbs are for more normal, lightly gritty sounds, to whcih I can add some normal types of reverb. Everything AFTER the Reverbs (including a second Rat) is set for more agressive, over the top stuff, for which I either a) run without reverb at all (almost never use 'verb on the Big Muff) or I run the Reverb INTO the dirt, which creates some really cool noise.

Wow! Do you.. or even can you... run pre gains and post gains at the same time?

I'm not sure I understand the question.

I COULD turn everything on at once, but honestly, the results aren't that cool.

                Re: Dirt box placement...

                Why do I ask?
I am waiting on UPS to bring me a new pedal today! It is a dual channel higher gain box.
I already use a Barber Half Gainer which is also dual channel, great low to med gain.
What I am receiving is a higher gain version of this... a Dual Unlimited.

I have been running my FB3 into a OCD and then into the Barber... I would combine these, for most of my higher gain leads.
The OCD into the lower gain ch. of the 1/2 Gainer and it sounds quite good.

However as good as they sound together... The OCD alone always sounds weak in comparison, even running at 18 volts... to the Barber
(maybe just onstage perception on my part) So I decided to go all Barber. (They use a special old style phonograph preamp, I guess)

So I have been running FB3 (Clean Boost) into OCD (High Gain) into Barber (Low Gain)
I might run any combination of these together at one time...

I just wondered what others do?...
I'm hoping with two (2) dual channel boxes (4 Gain sounds total) plus a clean boost, I won't need to combine anything anymore...
But I will still need to put one in front of the other... I don't use a looper.
                .

I just figured someone here would have jumped on that... and quickly.
I'm Sorry... If that offends you... honestly, I am.
After I wrote the post and then read it... I frankly expected someone to jump in with that...

                        Re: Dirt box placement...

My chain goes Timmy > Landgraff DO > Landgraff Mo'd > MI Boost'n'Buff, and then to a looper that has chorus and delays run from the loops. So essentially that's a transparent low gain, into a TS-808, into a RAT. They are all on low gain settings and just above unity, and they all work together for a broad palette of gain options. The Boost'n'Buff at the end provides a line driver to the last cable, and also a clean boost to everything before it when engaged. One of the beauties of all three pedals is that they have the option of symmetrical or asymmetrical clipping, which assists in getting them to play nice with each other. The two Landgraffs work beautifully in tandem, and the Timmy seems to get along with most other pedals and a wide range of amps.

My best guess is that it had something to do with the thread title, rather than Eric's post.
