  • Where do you guys buy your tolex?

It's starting to warm up outside and I want to get my cab retolexed so I can get it into action! Also what do you guys use to glue it on? Do I need to scrape the old glue off or can I just leave it?

Since everywhere I've looked, all the tolex prices are pretty much the same for any design or color, so I think I'm going with snakeskin and be done with it!

Handmade amp parts and hardware: Faceplates, backplates, fiberboards, and turret boards. Plus amp knobs, nuts and screws.

Don't mean to jack the thread but is it easy to re-tolex an amp?

Couldn't tell ya bro! This my first time at attempting to do this. My plan is to order enough tolex to do my cab, Marshall DSL head and a pedal board!

I think butnut or Aryton could probably answer your question better though. I think those guys have done a few cabinets!

I'd strip the old stuff off first carefully. If you manage to get the old stuff off in one piece (for the most part), you can use it as a pattern to cut the new stuff. Betcha didn't think about that...

I leave the old glue on. Tolex has a rough texture so it's not gonna telegraph unless ya got some huge boogers on there. Good old contact cement. Weldwood, they make a gel one that is pretty good. Using the old cover is OK as long as it's not stretched, the rounded corners will probably be real stiff and hold their shape making a good trace difficult. I prefer to lay it on and cut as I go...but I've got upholstery years so that's the way I always work...good luck.
