As a longtime fan of that album, and that song in particular, I can verify that it can be done with a Boss PH12 Phaser set for a tremolo effect.
Whether or not it was done with a Phaser, Tremolo, or synth, I have no idea.

Sound a lot like a phaser on a fast sweep. If you pick in time with the open part you almost get an autowah type effect.Comment
