  • new cab or new amp

A friend of mine has been playing through a Randall rh120 half stack. He is wanting to get a avatar 412 with vintage 30's to go under the head. However he has a opportunity to get a peavey valveking half stack for 650$. They are around the same money.
What would you guys do? Upgrade to a killer cab or upgrade to a better amp and slightly better cab?

Tough call. Not a fan of the VK. That said, I would go with tthat option for him. It might work for his needs, I just despised mine. However, He could get a used DSL for that price, use his old 412 until he gets some money to get a better cab.

Personally, in this given situation, I'd go for the cab.

I'm just not a fan of Peavy amps.

With that cab, he can match it with a better head and have better overall sound. YMMV.
If I know I'm going crazy, I must not be insane.

        Get the good cab.
He'll get a better amp at some point.
Great cabs will last through many amps.

Cab. Aint nothing like upgrading the final stage of your sound, good speakers are a guaranteed improvement vs. possibly ending up in the same ballpark after buying another head.

Valveking for $650? Even with the cab, that's mondo overpriced.
