I love my Randall oversized 2x12 with 1/3 of the back removed.
With lots of gain, volume and lowend a 2x12 cab can easily get overwhelmed and quite congested/blurry sounding. The extra breathing space helps some of the sound disperse. More bloom in the room as they say...
I don't lose any lowend or tightness. The bass just gets wider and fuller.

I like a 2x 1x12 mix - Open back on top (weber blue) and closed back on the bottom (weber green back 55hz). Best of both worlds
