Re: Pedals as TONE or pedals as tone ENHANCERS????

I do a bit of both. I'm an OD nut, and will invariably have an OD or two on my board. Depending on what amp I'm using, I'll use them as the tone, or to enhance the tone. I really don't like any of the drive settings on my Roland Cube 60, but my Wylde OD produces a nice fat creamy distortion on it. My Peavey Royal 8 sounds great when cranked up, but a nice low gain OD pedal adds nice lead tones without fiddling with the volume knob on my guitar. On my Hot Rod Deluxe, I use mostly the amp's drive channel, though once I get my hands on an MXR Custom Badass Modified OD, I will use that in conjunction with the amp's drive for a full palette of overdrives and distortions.

I also really like my MXR Auto-Q auto wah. It's great for playing funky rhythms and sounds great on leads, especially Grateful Dead leads. My only other pedal at the moment is an MXR Carbon Copy.

Overall, I'd say I use them as enhancers, but sometimes they are doing more work than others.
