Re: Danmit, my VK112 is red-plating!

First of all, like others have said, the VK112 is fixed bias and it is NOT ADJUSTABLE. The intention is to buy tubes within a given "plate current rating" range; the Peavey branded tubes are all in the acceptable range.

Second; I wouldn't consider the VK series to be biased cold. They are what I would consider to be in the "normal" range with the correct tubes installed. Most of the ones I've seen sit in the 30 to 32mA range with correct tubes.

The VK design has what I consider to be fairly poor screen limiting; this is pretty common amongst most Peavey amps and I believe the intent is to give the 6L6s they use some EL34 character. Unfortunately, it also makes using tubes that have a high plate current rating challenging.

There is still the possibility that there is a problem with the bias circuit in the amp. I would highly suggest that you get it checked out by a tech to be certain.
Now operating part time: Glassman Tube Amps...repairs, rebuilds, restorations & modifications of tube equipment.

Still building: GlassMan Amplifiers (25 watt, all tube, single channel w/reverb, single 12" combo) and some more designs in the works.

    Located in Fort Wayne, IN

Note: I've "parked" my website in case anyone has been looking for it. I moved locations and haven't updated the site to reflect this.

Now that you mention that, I remember that the Triple X had issues with this in the first years of production and they changed out some components mid-stream or you would cook it with JJ E34Ls...mine was good to go, but I do recall others having issues.

I would agree that it sounds like symptoms of something else gone wrong.

I have never seen an audio tube or amp that did not allow the tubes to be biased. How else could the amp be made to run.?
          Anyway.....
If you are wanting to try some things yourself, you can pull the power tubes and check for any scoring/residue on the power tube sockets that might be causing Hell with your tubes.
You could do worse than to measure the screen resistors, and also check to see what kind of negative voltage your bias circuit is providing.

This is just a follow up. I went to Radioshack and bought a 50k linear pot and a 22k resistor and I installed a bias pot. I biased the damn thing and it works great now. Woo
Thanks for all the responses and info, you guys rock.
