  • good quality, inexpensive, small boost?!

    Guys,

I am borrowing my friends Mesa Electradyne and love it. I am going to be buying my own soon. I need a small pedal to add gain and saturation for higher gain rhythm and lead.
Basically something that makes it feel like an extra gain stage.

Pedals I am looking at are the Xotic EP boost or RC boost, Barber burn, Keeley Katana, Sonic Edge Tumbleweed, or any others?

Leaning toward an Xotic pedal. Right now I have a Sonic Edge J&J OD that is pretty sweet. My J&J Overdrive is sweet, so I c
ould always just use this since it is low enough gain, it works as a clean boost.

    Thanks!

Since I love the Sonic Edge J&J OD, maybe I will stick with it. The J&J is great...very powerful output, no flab and super transparent.

I would not qualify any of the pedals you listed as inexpensive. Definitely check out the z.vex SHO.

It's not, and neither are any of the pedals in the OP ...

            That was my first thought!

I was thinking Duncan Pickup Booster at the high end, MXR Microamp at the low end (which I love, by the way...)

            Bad Monkey perhaps - used?

Oh sorry guys, when I say not too expensive, I mean nothing over $200. I should have clarified.
Man I really like Sonic Edge pedals, the J&J is the best Overdrive pedal I have played. Maybe I stick with it.
Ben Fargen is a frickin genious. I still want to try an Xotic EP.

SHO is a GREAT boost...if you want something a little less clear then get a Box of Rock and just use the BOOST side, it's like an SHO w/o the extra clarity.

The Cusack More Louder is a great boost for just volume.

The Bad Bob from AnalogMan is neat too.

If you want real low buck but amazing for the money and then some MXR/CAE line driver!
If you just read a post by The Guy Who Invented Fire please understand that opinions change, mind sets change and as players our ears mature...not to mention our needs grow and change. With that in mind, today I may or may not agree with the post you just read!

I am a fan of the mxr/cae line driver. I used one with several amps and it worked great with them all.

I've always been kinda partial to the LPB-1. It does add a little color, and a little dirt at higher levels. It's also very easy to modify. For about $20-$25 used, it does a damn fine job.

One knob, simple circuit, and very cheap. It's worth a try.

Actually I remember I did try the LPB-1 a few years ago and it was way too muddy and flubby. The J&J just destroys it!
