  • I need an inexpensive compressor..........

.....that is easy to use and sounds good. I will be using it 2 ways....for funk guitar rhythm stuff and country finger picking clean stuff. As far as price, a hundred bucks or less, new or used.

    What are your faves.

    Marshall Edward?

Way below 100 bucks new, and very underrated IMO. Just like all Marshall pedals!

The MXR Custom Comp can be had used well under a bill and it's a great comp...

If you just read a post by The Guy Who Invented Fire please understand that opinions change, mind sets change and as players our ears mature...not to mention our needs grow and change. With that in mind, today I may or may not agree with the post you just read!

Used Danelectro Surf & Turf- probably about $30, and it is essentially a dyna comp clone.

Dynacomp. My only complaint is that you need a screwdriver to change the battery. Thankfully that's infrequently needed.

Guess I'll be the first to suggest the good ol' Boss. Maybe I'm talking out of turn though. Pretty much all my Boss compressor experience was with one modded by T. Jauernig.

I'd be inclined to try the Joyo Compressor, since it's possibly a copy of the revered Ross compressor, and it's dirt cheap at $40.

If there weren't too many budget restraints, I'd probably go for Cmatmods Signa Comp or Deluxe Compressor for around $150.
Or, the Wampler Ego for around $200.

I'd look into the Xotic SP.. Haven't tried it, but it sure looks intriguing, and it receives a lot of praise.

Is the Ross Compressor revered? I've had one since forever, but always thought it did too much stair-stepping to be really useful. I should probably give mine another try.

Re: I need an inexpensive compressor..........

In that price range, I would go for a Boss CS-3.

But, in my honest opinion, compressors are seriously affecting your dynamics and raising the floor noise, it worths it to get a good compressor from the very beginning.
I've got 5 different compressors (Boss CS-2, MXR Dyna Comp reissue, MXR Custom Comp, T.Rex CompNova, Mad Professor Forest Green Compressor) before I went to the final one: the Wampler EGO Compressor.
Wampler EGO Compressor has anything you will ever need in a compressor and, it's quiet enough. From squeezed to transparent compresison, to parallel compression (Like the Barber), to sustainer (like the CS-3 and Forest Green), to a blend of everything together.

Tag price is $200. If you register in their forum as a member, you got a discount of $20, so, final price would be $180.
You wouldn't be never ever in the search of a better compressor (as I did 5 times, expending way more money).
                    Just my 2 cts.

I am liking the BYOC Optical compressor I built not long a ago. Totally different feel to the compression than the Ross/Dynacomp family of copmpressors

                        when I think compressor
                        I always think Dyna Comp

but the Boss should be fine

all the circuits for them I have seen are essentially the same

Supposedly the Biyang Compressor is very similar to the ROSS compressor except with a lower noise floor and I will look to buy one soon. This guy (while mainly talking about bass) reviews heaps of compressors and compares them http://www.ovnilab.com/. Also depends if you want clean transparent compression or more of a country or jangly sounding compressor (ross comp and its similar version)
