I had an original DSL 401. It came with The EL84's and had a spongy, compressed feel, not very aggressive. The new ones come with a pair of EL34's, rather than a quad of EL84's.

Also, the first series of DSL401's had overheating problems- which I hooked up a fan in the back to help. Marshall later fixed the problem in the next series, but raised the price $200 as well.

I'd say go with the newer one

For what its worth... I played a DSL 40C the other day.
It was one of the best sounding amps I've played!
      And VERY versatile.
I was very impressed with the cleans, and could dial in a great tone for blues/rock. (And that's coming from someone who plays a Fender with superb cleans).
The drive channel (lead 1) was descent/good. And the overdrive channel (lead 2) I just didn't use because its not my style.

I think it was priced at $699 at GayCenter... I mean Guitar Center.
