  • New Tube Day

I need new tubes for my Night Train and was shopping online when I realized that one of the big tube stores is actually *in* my town. So this afternoon, I'm knocking off work early to go shopping. Gonna grab a few different 12AX7s to try out in the V3 spot, as well as some new EL84s.

Any recommendations on models that I should make sure to grab?

    Re: New Tube Day

It is all a crap shoot.
Tubes do not have a frequency response, like a speaker.
The Achilles' heal of modern tubes Is/Can Be longevity.
Pay no attention to tube "reviews".....buy a few different types and see what you think. It all varies from amp to player to guitar.
    good luck
BTW.......did you just create a new "new" category .......NTD

EHX 12ax7's worked for me in any amp in any position. Tight, clear and lasts.

        Re: New Tube Day

I ended up buying seven tubes: one each of the 12ax7s from Genelex, Tung-Sol & Mullard and a matched pair of both Tung-Sol and Mullard EL84s.

All made in the same reflektor factory all based on the Sovtek 12Ax7 LPS...

Yes, New Sensor. But all with visibly different construction and reportedly different sound. Too early for me to say exactly what differences I hear.

Yeah...you are doing the "right" thing.
Relektor does not just make one X7 with 5 different ink stamps.
You may prefer one over another depending on the amp.....some may sound the same...some you may not care for.
              Just go with your gut.
              good luck

Yup. They are all made in the same factory but they sound very different. The tung sol and mullard are a good example.

Keep hearing about those Mullards. Have you tried one yet and maybe compared it to the Tung Sol?
