Best solid state for Metal?

Re: Best solid state for Metal?

Most of these can be had pretty cheap:

Peavey XXL
Marshall Valvestate (8100 or VS100)
Crate GX130
Ampeg VH140
Ibanez TBX150
H&K Warp
Randall RG100

If you have the money, the ISP Theta is probably the "best" but they can be pretty hard to find and fairly expensive compared to the others.

Re: Best solid state for Metal?

I have a Laney GH 100L. It's a great amp, very versatile IMO and I can get an awesome metal sound with a little help (Boss MT-2). I'm looking for a good solid state for metal because sometimes my neighbours want to kill me hahah...

Chuck Schuldiner was a Valvestate 8100 guy, right?

Thanks Dominus

Re: Best solid state for Metal?

What do you think is the best solid state amp (head) for metal?

What would this amp be used for? full band? independent practice? Why does it have to be a head? Whats your budget?

If it needs to be a head than I'd probably recommend an Orange, or Randall RG series. Heck...maybe even a line 6. But I'd need to know more details on what its going to be used for..

Chuck Schuldiner, Dino Cazares (Fear Factory/Divine Heresy), Tommy Victor (Prong), and a few others.

The Orange solid state amps are still a bit pricey. Line 6 is digital rather than analog solid state, and usually sounds like it.

I would use it both independent practice and full band. Head is just a matter of taste. My budget would be around $500,00...

Orange could be a good choice. I'm not very found of Line 6's, the sound is too "unreal' I think..

Re: Best solid state for Metal?

Out of the list I made, the only ones I don't have are the Ampeg (as the Crate sounds pretty close to it) and the Theta. :D

well you can definately get a decent SS head for 500.00. Orange sells their Crush pro 120Watt head for like 449.00. Its awesome for being solid state. Line 6 might be modeling but you can get almost any sound outta it. Or the RG 100, 150 or 300H. Keep in mind that as far as I know...all SS amp head use 4Ohm ratings when they advertise their wattage/power output....so like the RG3003H is 300Watts at 4ohms...but will be more like 175 watts (approx.) at 8ohms...so any SS head over 100 watts will do the trick when playing with a full band. I used a 100watt SS half stack for the longest time until we switched over to tube amps...kept getting drowned out lol

Re: Best solid state for Metal?

I know you're not asking about tube amps, but I gotta say it - this is the best time in the history of amps to buy a cheap, loud tube amp. They're blowing out that bugera stuff for like $240. 120 watts all tube. Unless you're physically allergic to tubes I don't see what the hangup would be.

hahah.. I actually have a Laney GH 100L 100 watts all tube which I love!!! But it has to be really loud to get nice tones. So I'm was wondering about a solid state that would do the job for room practicing and also full band!!

Re: Best solid state for Metal?

My Laney GC80A sounds great at any volume
I saw a GC50A on GC used for $99

Solid state amps sound pretty much the same
Loud or soft

Some folks think they dont squish up like a tube amp

But hey it's all good

Re: Best solid state for Metal?

I like my AMT Stonehead for Metal. 50 Watt little mini head. 4 channels - Clean, Crunch, Lead 1, Lead 2

High gain beast of a solid state amp.

Re: Best solid state for Metal?

My first choice in a SS amp for metal would be a Randall RG. They're bulletproof while sounding great for SS and being surprisingly loud if need be.

Re: Best solid state for Metal?

Not all RG100's are created equal. If you're looking at a Randall, I'd hold out for a decent ES model. The one Dime used was the RG100ES and Randall also made a rackmount head from around the time of the ES series (mid 80's) that is better than the late 90's Randall stuff (also look for the old RG80ES head; people overlook it because it's a 'mere' 80 watts).

The Randall Century models are great but there are more living members of the Beatles than there are Randall Century amps, so...

The Crate GX130C was my high school amp and I recommend it (it's a clone of the Ampeg VH140). With the right speakers and pickups, it's quite vicious.
