      Re: Tube Choices

Well, my amp currently has 4 6L6s. I just bought 2 new 6L6s and 2 new EL34s. I already regret it even though they haven't gotten here yet. I haven't done all my homework, but basically I read someone else's review of EL-34s and they said that they have a more 'wild' or 'loose' tone, like a Marshalls natural distortion. Not so much of a tight distortion, which is more what I was looking for. Oops. I guess I'll find out when they get here.

Curly, you're an amp ho. Nuff said.

My absolute favorite tube right now, emphasize right now, is the small bottle 6L6GWB that TAD is making. Those tubes are just musical if that makes any sense. Like they were designed to go into guitar amplifiers only.

My favorite isn't up there: 6CA7

Actually , I dunno that I have an absolute favorite. For aggressive tones, I like 6CA7's (EL34's) but for most other stuff I really like 6L6's. I'll leave the small bottles to other folks.

                    Re: Tube Choices

That is a very hard choice, because there is so much more the sound is dependant on than the tubes.

Right now my favorite amp has 6L6's in it, so I gotta go there.

Nothing wrong with the others though.

uh....you put EL84 twice instead of having an EL34 option

                        Re: Tube Choices

I voted for El-84's, but my Blue angel can use 6L6's, 6V6's, and EL-84's, and I like it's tone no matter what tubes are in it. I had a THD that allowed me to try a bunch of different types of tubes, and I think it just depends what mood I'm in. I like 'em all. That being said, I can usually dial in my tone the quickest in an EL-84 amp.

My favorite is EL-34's. I love 6L6's and EL-84's too, but EL-34's have that woody 'chunk' that sounds great with humbuckers or singles. Having an amp collection that includes all the popular tubes has always been a goal, and is a luxury for any tube fan.

I particularly enjoy the saturated sound of 6V6's, especially with a TS9 or similar pedal up front. It's just a simpler sound, not as much of a handful as a 6L6, and I enjoy it for it's generally sweet tone.
