I finally tried a JSX

went and played one today..
it was through a XXX cab

the clean channel sounded really nice and sparkly like, i loved it. but the crunch just couldnt sound like the crunch channel on the XXX.. it sounded like more of a rock n roll sound rather than a heavy metal sound, it didnt seem to have enough crunch to it.. the ultra channel was rather nice though, i thought it was better for playing ryhtym and leads than the crunch channel. i couldnt really manage to even hit squeels on the crunch channel and it overall was kinda dull sounding.. i dunno if this would change if i played louder though, i had the amp kinda quiet.. what are anyone elses thoughts on this amp who have tried it? i loved the clean, the ultra channel was good, but the crunch channel just didnt do it for me.

oh and for anyone whos wondering.. i emailed peavey asking about when the jsx cab comes out and they said within the next 2-3 months there should be one.

Honestly, I think it's the XXX cabinet. Never really liked that thing.

Still prefer the 5150, though .

hehe maybe.. but i talked to my friend and he says for a tube amp to sound good the tubes gotta be hot, and at he volume i was playing(really low) they probably werent that hot so that could be it.. im gonna go try it with him in a couple weeks and i'll se what happens

The Crunch channel on the JSX is moddeled after the lead channel of the Classic 50, and the Ultra channel is like the crunch channel on the XXX. The JSX sounds best through the Classic 412, which sadly has been discontinued.

It's true that is sounds better the louder it is.

Amps like those aren't even hitting their potential till the volume is past 4, which is only appropriate for a rehearsal studio or stage. The tones that never sound right are the midgain crunch tones, when the amp is turned too low.

You'll have a better idea of how a 100W amp is, if you're in a band situation playing next to a drummer and bassist.

Playing at home, I get the best results out of a Vox modeling head on top of a Marshall cabinet. If you're looking for a highgain amp that's useful to you at home, I'd recommend the Vox AD60 head on a good cab. If you ever try one out at the store, don't forget to combine 1 of the 3 overdrive models with the amp models. If the OD model is off, you're only gonna hear OK tones, not great ones. On the Vox, you can dial in any shade of highgain, midgain, and clean. With a loud tube head, you're stuck with the tone it has. With the Vox, you can sound like anything from Sabbath, Pantera, Metallica, VH, Lamb of God, AC/DC, depending on which amp/OD model you have dialed in. Don't let the retro look fool you. For less than $500, you can have a modeler that sounds as good as a $1600 Vetta.

When I had one very briefly, I used the ultra channel for rhythm and the crunch boosted for leads.

I've been thinking about the JSX and ALMOST ordered one, but didn't because they're out of stock. Now what your saying about the gain has me worried, I figured it would be a better version of the XXX. *sigh* the closest place for me to try one out is in Atlanta. I've played both the XXX and the 5150. I absolutely fell in love with the XXX. The 5150/6505 is cheaper than the XXX and JSX. DSS have if you've played the XXX what would you go for? I need tons of gain and low end but also a lot of clarity for intricate lead work. I know whatever I get will be a Peavey head though since I can't really afford a boutique amp. I know you'll probably say the 5150 hands down because that's what you say to everyone lol!! But can you give me specific pros and cons? Clean tone doesn't have to be super clean because we only go clean for a short fingerpicked section at the end of one of our songs, so it's not important for it to be pristine. The thing I'm most wondering about is how much clarity is there in the 5150? Also what is the difference between the reg. 6505 and the 6505+. Some people have said that the +, even with the added tube, has LESS gain than the reg. 6505...*sigh* HELP PLEASE!:ugh1:

I owned an XXX for a year and a half...had some time to do some tweaks with it. I took it in with my cabinet and axes and pedals when I bought the 5150. The 5150 was more organic, in your face, ballsy, and clear. They both sound good, but I prefer the 5150.

They both have about equal clarity, but they're really different beasts.
XXX Pro's: 3 Channels, all useable. The clean channel is useable and actually sounds really good with some chorus and very. Adjustable FX loop levels. EL34 switch.
XXX Con's: Resonance switching... I prefer a resonance and presence knob to the tight/medium/loose switch. Has a less raw tone

5150 Pro's: Insanely organic sounding gain, stays clear and defined no matter what. The mids are voiced perfectly, and sit PERFECTLY in a band mix.
5150 Con's: Cleans are rather...well, bland. It's a little noisier than the XXX head.


To be perfectly honest, I'm considering pickup up a JSX or XXX again next. Originally, I was going to get a Mesa, but the bang for buck and overall tone I don't think suits me as well as the XXX does.

Awesome man, I really appreciate the info. I've been giving a lot of thought about amp selection because my funds haven't been that great lately. I recently started a new job that's allowed me to catch up all my bills and have enough money left over to get some stuff for myself I'm going to go for the 6505. It's a cheaper and I'll be able to do an EZpay with American Musical, which is really the only option I have for getting equipment at the moment. Thanks again for the info. I'll get back to you guys on how the 6505 treats me, I do have some fond memories of the 5150 but that was a couple years back, so I'm hopefully going to make some more!

the way DDS describes the 5150 distortion makes me want one of those but i gotta have nice cleans cause i love playing acoustic style riffs so im gonna try out the jsx again and probably get that.. i wish the 5150 had as nice a clean channel

Also, DSS could you post some clips or send me some clips of JUST the 5150 that you have? I know that you have it modded but what mods do you have? heyy, yeah well i had it at low volume, and really low i mean, and the distortion on the ultra channel could have more than enough, it didnt sound bad at all, next time i go try it i'll turn it up a bit and keep in mind that the ultra channel is meant for rythym rather than the XXX's ultra channel

For what it's worth, I kept the gain on my XXX at about 3. On the 5150, it's at about 3.5-4, both with a tubescreamer.
