  • The Evanescence Going Under 5 speaker shootout

This is what happens when I have too much time on my hands.
Please don't judge the sloppy playing, I don't claim to be good at playing, but I know how to make the tones I like!

I really like get to listen back and get a feel for these speakers tones.

    Eminence DV77
    Eminence Swamp Thang
    Celestion G12 T-75
    Eminence Manowar
    Celestion G12 K100

In this scenario: I used a Gibson Les Paul BFG, with a Seymour Duncan Distortion tuner Drop B

Pedals used: EHX East River drive, ISP decimator,

    Amplifier: Marshall JVM ch3,

Recorded with a Shure SM57, focusrite Scarlett, Dolby On app, into my phone, then uploaded into Reaper, to chop up the audio and video.

    Zero processing was done anywhere.

All speakers were mic'd at the edge of the dust cap, and not off axis.

I dug the Celestions better here.

There's something in the midrange of the Eminences that I don't love. I didn't hear it in your previous clips, so not sure if it's the JVM that emphasizes it. But I hear the typical Eminence midrange that I don't love. The Celesions sound punchy and in your face. The Eminences sound a bit cloudy and distant by comparison. Not dark... just with a weird midrange voicing.

But all the tones were good! I just preferred the Celestions here.

I think there is just something familiar with Celestions. We've heard them over and over and over. So they just sound... right. I noticed this myself years ago. I had a giant collection of Eminence. Honestly sounded great. Then I got a random cab with some celestion 75s. And there was something to the sound that was more there than before. Even if not the speaker I wanted.

So I got some greenbacks on a whim. Sold every eminence I had. Never looked back lol.
Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.
