filter caps

could a constant hum from an amp be caused by filter caps that are on their way out? i read somewhere that this can be true but i'm not sure whether or not this is valid.

my dual rectifier hums a lot. it happens on both channels, even when the gain is at a minimum. it's not noticable when you're playing, but it's just annoying to have to hear in between songs or in the middle of practice when the band is trying to write. and i know for a fact that it's not a grounding problem.

could it be the filter caps, or are there any other culprits that could cause an amp to hum all the time?

Yep....The filter caps "filter out" ripple in your ac in your amp....A Bad cap would definately cause a hum then!

You could also have a bad output tube and it's pulling all of your voltage out of your amp...Try some output tubes first...

Re: filter caps

If they are over 10 years old, have them replaced. If you look at the ends of the electrolytics and you see little bubbling, they need to be replaced. It's like the tires on your car. They're only good for so many 1000's of miles. :)

Re: filter caps

i'm pretty confident it isn't the output tubes, as i've changed them before and the humming was still there. but the amp is at least ten years old...perhaps it's time for a checkup.

thanks for the input :)
