Tell me everything you know about proper FX loop usage

I am new to the FX loop business and I would like some advice. I understand what it does and what kind of effects to run through it, But I dont really get the desired outcome.

What is a parallell loop and so forth.

I get weak in the knees at the sight of a vintage Fender amp!
