Re: My need for tweed is starting to exceed......

I think those old fender amps were just designed to compliment old Fender guitars. No two ways about it. Single coils really come alive with an old tweed. Humbuckers take some tweaking.

I agree that teles and tweeds are great mates, and I've said so recently.

as jeremy said, the tweed amps smooth out the tone. they also lend body and sustain, and are just more fun to play through, IMO.

early teles were all over the map as far as pickup and other specs, but The Fender Telecaster book says that some were real screamers.

and, yes, any of the vintage type bridge pickups - Broadcaster, JD, Antiquities - should get you there. Antiquities aren't too high output, but not potting gives them bite.

teles probably sound good through any tweed amp, but the Deluxe does seem just right

Neck humbuckers will fart out a variety of old style amps. I play my R9 pretty much exclusively on the bridge position with the 18w. The Deluxe isn't quite so sensitve. Oddly enough, the Tele behaves more like the R9 through the 18w The Strat works great set on the bridge or either of the notch positions through the 18w. Obviously, you can (and arguably need to) crank the amp volume a lot higher with the Fenders.

Do anyof you guys have any experience with the tweed Bandmaster? That always struck me as the perfect sized tweed amp and i like the sounds that Pete Townsend got out of his.

The low wattage amp that suprises me with humbuckers is the Celtic Franklin (Lightning 2xEL84) I build. I think it sounds a lot better with hummers than singles.

One thing I dig on Bandmasters is the slight impedance mismatch that most of them seem to have. Three 8 ohm speakers run about 2.6 ohms or so. Most bandmasters run them from a 4 ohm output transformer.

On the bandmaster 3x10 that a forum bro is having me build, we're going to wire one of the speakers with a little on/off switch. so, it'll go from a 2x10 at 4 ohms to a 3x10 at 2.6 ohms.

Ought to be epic when its done.
