  • MXR Flanger mods?

Hey guys. I have an M117R MXR Flanger Pedal and I really like it, but I have two minor gripes with it.

    1) There's a loud "pop" noise that occurs whenever I turn the pedal on or off.

    2) The signal level seems to drop a few dB whenever I turn it on. Its not much of a volume cut but it's enough to put a minor dent in my solo volume.

Anyone know where I can get these two issues fixed?

I'm no pedal expert (digital effects all the way ) but try running guitar > flanger > normal clean amp (not a cranked one, either) to check if it's definitely dropping the volume.

It's in the effects loop and the case of the volume drop is the same either way, in front of the amp or out of the loop. It's a little bit of an actual dB drop and a little bit of the mids thinning out.

I think you can solder in a 1Mohm resistor both on the input and the output end of the circuit. Run each one to ground. That's supposed to prevent any potential from getting stored in the circuit that causes the popping when turning on and off. Perhaps one of the guru's will chime in a verify this for us.

Thanks again, man. I'm keeping an eye on the thread.

I emailed Mike @ analogman and he said that the reissues aren't really moddable since they're all PCB. He said that if I had an original one from the 70's that it'd be a different story, though.

Did you try it all alone?
With guitar and amp alone and no other pedals in front or after it?

Yes and yes, both in front of the amp and in the loop.

                    Sounds faulty then!
                    Maybe the switch is gone??
Has it always behaved like this?

                      Always.

Maybe I should check and see if new ones do this... I got this one off ebay and it was literally in mint condition, the pedal hadn't even been out of the plastic, all the seals were unbroken.

In any case I do like the sound and its a relatively mild concern but it's one i would like to correct.

Click the pedal a few times before you turn it (your amp) on... yay for static energy.
