  • Duct tape?

I've noticed a lot of blues guitarists and such live often have duct tape in the middle of the amps speaker grille. Is this to lower the shrillness of the output? And is it for live use or like micing purposes?

And do you do it? And should i do it? I do sit near my amp and it is kinda shrill if right in front of it. Can i use clear packing tape ?

That's the poorman's beam blocker. SRV was known for using duct tape. It helps deflect some of the spiky high end that can be unpleasant to the ear. I use duct tape in front of my Celestion V30 for this reason.

Are you familiar with the concept of the Weber BeamBlocker?

Well, with the tape, you just put a piece or two of the tape (on the INSIDE) of the speaker cloth. It forces those directional highs to diffuse a bit, rounding off the sound, taking away some of the ice pick through your forehead effect.

Just add a can of WD-40 and you have the perfect toolkit for any occasion.

I've met roadie's that call duct tape `ROCK N' ROLL TAPE'!! My Bass player keeps a roll in his Bass case ,And I can't think of a gig we've done without using it to secure P.A. wires, microphones and etc. Drummers even use it to damping their snares and keep the kick drum from walking. It truly is Rock N' Roll Tape.
