Been looking at the TC electronics bass amps lately http://www.tcelectronic.com/bh250/ very small portable 250 watt head 300 bucks the combo comes with a bunch of speaker options for 100 to 200 bucks more. I am going to buy the head for a general all around backup that fits in a small bag.

I'll second the Carvin RL series heads. I personally don't care for them as I like a more colored sound (Ampeg fan here), but those Carvins are clean, cheap, and LOUD. Exactly what you're looking for.

Which is why many people play electric guitars but very very few of them are actually musicians.

I'd go with that 1000 watt Carvin.

                        Head or combo?

If you score a bass cab, you can use either a dedicated bass head, or even an old PA head.

I recommend Sweetwater for new stuff. Their customer service is really tight.

I'd recommend an Acoustic. Great value for the money, and I've used an Acoustic on a good number of recordings and got great results, along with letting my bass player borrow it for practices, and he has no problems being heard in a band mix. Great tone as well.

I have that head, I run it through a Phil Jones neo 6x5 cab, and I absolutely love it. Plenty of power, clean tones, and it goes in a gig bag without weighing it down. The older I get, the more I appreciate that.
