  • Ref: What is a stereo output jack?

This is from GoldenVulture continuing the former discussion by showing the Chris Squire setup, sorry for the misfire:

Hello; You were a bit quick in closing your thread about stereo jacks.
This should clarify Johnny the Kids reference to Chris Squire and also about the function of stereo jacks.

Many Rickenbackers—both guitars and basses—are equipped to be compatible with a "Rick-O-Sound" unit via an extra "stereo" output socket that allows the two pickups (or neck and middle pickup combined/bridge pickup, in the case of three pickup instruments) to be connected to different effects units or amplifiers.
Using the stereo jack is very common to turn your battery on and off in pedals.
In guitars it is more likely to be feeding out a stereo signal.

In active instruments, you will use the stereo jack as a mono output, bus you are gonna need it to make the preamp work only when a wire is plugged in.
Itīs just it, but if you want cool stuff like 2 amps for the same instrument, i recommend you havig two individual outputs on the guitar/bass. It means you will have two wires coming from you but Itīs gonna be easier to set up.

As has been said, with active electronics, a stereo jack is not "stereo", it's just a TRS jack (tip, ring, sleeve) that turns on the electronics when a mono 1/4" jack is inserted. It does this by completing the ground circuit through the Ring and Sleeve connections, otherwise your electronics would be on all the time killing the battery, or you would need a on/off switch to turn them on. Look up wiring for EMG pickups, that's how they are wired.

You can find 1/4" TRS to dual 1/4" mono Y cables. Typically, however, they are insert/patch cables, but you can find instrument-grade and stage-length (over 10 feet) if you look around.

This is easier than carving a hole for another output jack in your guitar, and can be done to any guitar simply by replacing the mono jack with a stereo jack.
