I hear Squire more in Ged's playing than Ox.

Once you have you roots - explore what to DO with the roots
- Whole note times
- Quarter note roots
- 8th note roots
- rhythmic roots
All variations on the basic root
Then Root/5th
See above...like R-5-R-5-R-5-R-5 (Think Boston - Long Time)
Or R-R-R-5-R-R-R-5
Or rhythmic patterns again
Then the Arpeggios or Scales - your call. I like moving between tones on bass.
A surprising suggestion on a song that surprised me. I volunteered to play bass on Strutter by KISS. I thought this would be easy. I was wrong. Great song, and watch how the bass walks scales between chord tones. Then it locks in with the guitar for impact.Originally posted by Bad City

Back on the OX, Squire, Geddy topic.....
Point is learn to play fluidly up the neck and down the neck instead of moving up and down strings at the same fret position -it makes bass playing more rhythmic and WAY MORE rocking and fun.
When I see these bass players who's fret hand never moves -only moves between the strings or a few frets, I'm thinkin they are missing out totally on the magic of bass playin' -it's all about bouncin' up the fretboard and mixing it in with a big bottom open string.

Also, a lot of bass players start off as guitarists, Paul McCartney, noel Reading, and others. Guitar players turned bassists obviously have a different approach to the bass. I have sometimes even heard this as a slam "he sounds like a guitarist playing bass". But there are a ton of fantastic bass players that started as guitarists, I would dare say most of them.

Tons can be found just off the basic power chord - root, fifth, octave.
Then figure out how to add rests/space.Originally posted by crusty philtrumAnyone who *sings* at me through their teeth deserves to have a bus drive through their face
