How do I get that bass sound?

It's been awhile since I've heard it, but I suspect that the onboard eqs of either of my active pickup basses would get me there.

Honestly, I'm going to have to listen to one of their tunes before I can be more specific.

Played with a pick, for sure.
Props to Paul Dean for his guitar tone.

              The amp probably matters.

                  Listening to some Loverboy.
Tonewise, neck pickup, hard knee compressor, scoop the high mids, decent amp through a 1x15" cab with a horn.
                  Play with a pick.

Well, if you are recording direct.
Otherwise, the room sound will provide plenty of reverb naturally.

Scott was using a Spector bass which I thing has a P pickup. I don't hear anything special about its sound but use round wound strings, a bit of tube amp distortion, a compressor and play with a pick (or hit hard with your fingers).

Saw them the first time at Montreal Forum on May 8th 1982 (the day that Gilles Villeneuve died) with Bryan Adams opening the show with its first album.
