Applying a finish to a maple neck

Hey guys, I'm thinking about picking up a Warmoth neck for my Strat project. A very basic satin finish costs $50, I'm wondering if this is something I can do myself. Is it difficult to apply a finish to a maple neck with a rosewood fretboard? Could I likely do a good job myself, or is this something best left to a pro? Thanks.

IMO, 50 bucks is cheap for a 'pro' neck finish...I think they only shoot poly which if you were going to do, the materials alone would be way more than that. If they are going to do the neck amber or some kind of vintage tone to it...even better deal. Paint products are not cheap...epecially if you are only using it for one piece. If their satin finish is anything like my Jimmie Vaughan satin necks, it's the best neck finish I've ever felt, blows away gloss poly and satin nitro...smooth as butta.

Ever consider a Tung Oil finish? Similar to a clear satin painted one, but that's something you can easily do yourself. Just buy a bottle at Home Depot and follow the directions. Lots of bass guitars have this- it leaves a nice wood feel on the hand. Best of all, you'll have something really custom that you can say you did yourself! Oh, and saving a good $45 doesn't hurt either!
