6550 Power Tube's

Whats the story on these?

I plan on picking up a Marshall JCM800 2205 in the near future.

What should I expect in a 6550 tube relative to a EL34?

I had some 6550 tubes in an ENGL Savage, and the story on these compared to something like an el34 is that they have much more headroom and dont break up into power tube distortion as early as el34's or even 6L6's. Although i think with an attenuator or if you're gonna be cranking it you wouldnt have much problem anyway.

But yeah, with one of those amps im pretty sure you can just mod it to take el34's anyway if you dont like the 6550's....i think....dont quote me there

I dont really know how to describe them in terms of tone properly, but if you go to tube websites like dougs tubes or KCA tubes or something like that you will find descriptions, and in a lot of other online places too.

For example though, Zakk Wylde plays through marshall JCM800's with 6550's i think.
