The only guy who I have hears who consistently had great tone with 8;s was Billy Gibbons, but he could play fishing line & make it sound good. I gues it does depend on what you do. I play alot of acoustic guitar & I drop the strings down into a variety of altered tuning on acoustics. The 13's work really well. I get a very big clear tone with them on all my acoustics. Going to 11's on my electrics (I was using 10's) just made the switch from acoustic to electric easier. In most cases I can't play a guitar in a music store. They are usually strung with 9's & the action is very low. I like the strings up a bit & I prefer a heavier gauge. I get a lot better tone and with the action up, the strings never buzz.

I made the switch over to DR strings about 6 years ago and while in that time I've tried some other brands (and before switching to DR I played a lot of different strings). It's the first time I noticed a difference in my strings.

I think the most important thing anyone can do is just not believe all the hype surrounding certain strings. Changing your strings often, setting up your instrument well, and knowing how to play will trump your string selection.

It won't matter what string you play if your guitar isn't setup right and you suck at playing it.

But when tone matters nothing beats DR.

I've tried Ernie Ball, D'Addarrio, SIT, Elixir, Cleartone, Red, Rotosound, Martin, Dean Markley, Everly, and Gibson.

Really? I was a DR user for a few months and while I liked the strings, they didn't have that "new" sound that I wanted each set to have.

When I started I used to only use Dean Markley. I love the way they sounded new but I found the tone falloff was too quick.

About 4 years ago I switched to D'Addario and that's all I use now. I find they don't sound so bright when new and are consistent in tone as they age. I will say this: I think I've broken maybe a couple strings total since going to D'Addarios.
