  • Fuzz on bass?

I finally found a band, we're gonna play "stoner rock" i wonder should i use a bit of fuzz on my bass? I can't decide

Our "influences" Black Sabbath, Orange Goblin, Danzig etc...

    Thanks!

Try it. You might like it. When mucking around on bass, one of my fave sounds (Boss VF-1 into Mackie Power amp and Peavey 2x15" cab) is the Ampeg SVT simulation with one octave below and a bit of fuzz. Just enough to tell it's there.
    Ain't nothin' but a G thang, baby.

The bass player in my band uses a Boss Hyper Fuzz and loves the sound he gets.

Just be careful you don't use too much distortion. It'll turn to mud. SS Guitar effects will tend to cut out the low end of a bass' sound too.

            Thanks for your answers!

            I have a ProCo Rat 2, so i don't need another pedal

I'm gonna try at rehearsal if it's sounds good!

i have an ampeg 5 pro that has some killer distortion and the octave effect with helps the fact that you lose bottom with overdrive, not something id use on every tune but a very cool tone

ibanez phat het has lo mid & hi-mid built in EQ

so you really don't lose any bottom end, infact you can gain a lot

I've always like the Boss ODB3... you can get some killer sounds out of that with careful tweaking.

                    Re: Fuzz on bass?

Dude whatever you do, don't crank the gain. Or if you do, make sure you don't have a huge volume boost. My bassist uses insane gain + volume boost which = me drowned out. In some parts of songs I can stop playing at practice and no one will notice. Just remember if you do decide to use fuzz, not to try and take over the lead. A little fuzz on bass goes a long way in making a difference in sound... but too much and the wrong frequencies will destroy a band.

Listen to mid 70s King Crimson. John Wetton, through a fuzzface into a hiwatt stack...mmmmmmm.

Larry Graham got some cool bass fuzzes too with Sly and the Family Stone. Not exatly the same type of music but still awesome.
