I was just restringing my main strat and the high E string was coming off of the tuning head after I wound the string...stupid me for cutting the string before it happened. But I strung my guitar up like I normally do and then as I played a little "widdly widdly woo" on it the e just went "pldfaojlws" but it didn't break..it just undid its self at the tuning head.

I'm really pissed about it(luckily I have my EVH strat :P) Anyone know why this happened and a good way for it to not happen.

Cut the string after installation?

Seriously, sounds like the string wasn't overlapping correctly during winding to lock it into place. Had that happen before when I was changing the saddles on a guitar. Had to use needle nose pliers to reuse the high E string. (Strings were only about an hour old, didn't feel like breaking into a new pack. )

+1 on cutting afterwards. and be thankful you don't have vintage style tuners! i know some people swear by them, but i had a guitar with them and after struggling to string it for about an hour i put the thing on craigslist. granted it was a combination of hating the tuners and the neck shape, but it was kind of the last straw with it.

plus, no matter how long you've been doing it, it's a good idea to watch and review some beginner stuff. i searched around for some stringing techniques and found that there was a lot i could have been doing to improve tuning stability and ease of installation. never too late to learn i guess. i know i'm only 21, but i've been playing for 7 or 8 years. i really never would have guessed one thing i didn't do properly was just string the damn guitar.

Well I way I'm doing it was the way my guitar teacher taught me and it works for every string. This is the first time its happened. So I guess I'm gonna be on youtube looking for new ways to string up :P

Wow. I'm really surprised to hear someone say that- the Vintage slotted Strat tuners I think are the easiest tuners to string up there are (barring something simple like PRS locking tuners). When I got my Strat mutt with the vintage tuners I could not believe Fender stopped using them-cut the string "3 tuners long"- put the tip in , bend it forward and around to the right and start winding- the wraps are super even, tight and stay that way.

I used to keep a bundle of 9s in my guitar box
( small tackle box of guitar crap )
last string I broke was the Low E tho

prices locally are outrageous 7-10 bucks for a set of 9-42s
I always get several sets when I buy
