  • Project RG... the first pic

Ok, so I've finished my RG built from spare parts, still needs a bit of set up and electrics sorting, but so far it's ace fun, even for a non shredder like myself.

Looks good man, I've always had a bit of a soft spot for RGs even if I'm a little ashamed to admit it. Not really a fan of how they play though. The natural finish was a great call.

What kinda pups did you put in there?
    I remember calloused hands and paint-stained jeans, and I remember safe-as-houses self-belief.

At the moment it's a problematic JB in the bridge, 59 in the neck and a cheap nasty stock ibanez in the middle.

Looks cool! I too like the natural finish. I like RGs and Mutts!

Nice! But don't you mind the 5 piece body like that?
It's asian basswood? Has lot's of grain on yours.
How did you get it sanded down that clean? I'm thinking hours of work! Or a heatgun maybe.

I'm working on a project like that myself, just without the floyd though.
Had to cut out the pickguard myself as not even Ibanez themselves sell HH pickguards!

The body on that RG is pretty decent. . . is it basswood? I thought basswood had no figuring. Funny how the finish change makes an RG look so much more like a working man's blues guitar.

I got it down to bare wood using an orbital sander, lots of manual sanding and some paint stripped for the hard to reach bits.
To get the grain to show even more I sanded make after the first two coats of danish oil.
I'm not too fussed about the multiple bits of wood that it's made from as they're not too obvious, especially from a distance.
These things are really great guitars, even with the korean neck to a jap body the fit was so snug you could easily pick it up by the neck without the body falling off.
Sound wise it's quite bright, and acoustically good and loud for a solid.
Biggest surprise was that even though the frets look pretty battered it played real nice even after a basic set up.
I'll post more pics at a later date.

If it's too bright sounding, slap a "HOOCKEY" Big Brass Block on that Edge...about $25.00 on eBay.

I would really like to see closer pics of that body without the pickguard.

Next time it's in bits I'll snap off a shot, but I'm not sure when that'll be.

First electric ever came from Woodsy's Music in Kent, OH - black RG with 81/85 EMGs. Always wanted it to be wood-tone.
