  • semi hollow vs hollowbody

Currently own an Epi Dot with upgraded electronics and pickups. Great tone and sound, but kind of heavy. Can anyone compare the sound of a hollowbody (casino) to a semi-hollow like I have? Given same pups and electronics

I've got both. Casinos are much lighter, but they also have P-90's, which gives them that open, clear, single coil sound. Being fully hollow, the have a richer sound with more overtones. 335's (Dots) are going to sound warmer, from the mid-focused HB's and the additional wood. Sustain will be better too.

Casinos are great guitars and I love mine, but it's for lower volume gigs, as it can feedback like crazy if you're not really careful. The key to controlling feedback is to stand relative to the amp where the feedback & noise are at a minimum, and when you're not playing, to either cover the strings with your hand or turn the volume down.

The Casino has P90's so they will be a little noisy(60hz hum)
by comparison to a humbucker. Second is the Casino or Gibson 330 is completely hollow, so squealing at high gain or high volume will be much more of a problem. A full hollow guitar like a Trini Lopez, 330, L5 or Casino is going to be harder to use at higher volume. So a lot of this depends on how loud you are going to play. I play at GIG volume mostly
and at times even my 335 will give me some issues.

The weight..... Well I never really noticed much difference in the weight of a Shereton vrs a Casino, so I don't think there will be much. Tone wise..... they are very different guitars.

You closed the tone gap. Good choice of mags in the Dot.

Do you play at high volumes often, and use much OD? Those are the two things that'll get feedback going.

My Casino is a featherweight, feels like half the weight of most 335's. It's an older Korean one, maybe it's light for a Casino.
