  • Ritchie Blackmore "scallop pattern"

    Hi guys,

anyone has any close-ups-pics of the Blackmore scallop pattern?
It's not like the YJM half-circles-pattern, it's a little different.

Any close-up pics you can link or even take yourself would be a big help.

Q: There's the original MIJ '97 Blackmore Strat and now there are the new MIM models. Do those MIM ones use the same pattern as the '97 MIJ model?

    Thanks a lot,
    Andy

Interesting question man. I didn't know there were different scalloping patterns. You made me curious now

Blackmores is more stepped and shallower. It's based on the sort of scalloping of a 12 string Lute which he also plays. Yngwie's is more like the Indian style which was used by McLaughlin and others.

        [copy'n'paste old post]

This refers to the Blackmore scallop as opposed to a Malmsteen scallop.

On the low frets, the Blackmore scallop is deep only towards the "counting" fret, not a symmetric valley in the middle.

am I the only one who sees that is backwards

the Blackmore Picture clearly shows the deepest part on the leading edge of the fret
no the trailing edge as in the top photo

who would want it on the trailing edge
            why?

            EDIT
that would be like a locking fixed bridge guitar
            why?

my guess is that the neck being held is a bolt on thats just being held for the photograph. it's probably NOT backwards like that. i would hope not!

and locking hardtails are awesome! now that is tuning stability.

No, I think you have the wrong impression from the photo. The neck I am holding has the head to the right in the photo you quoted.

It is the underside of the neck (note lack of markers).

                  Re: Ritchie Blackmore "scallop pattern"

I played a Malmsteen scallop, I like it, though I'm trying to get a Blackmore scallop done on another neck. The reason being is the scallop is great on the high strings, but a little awkward for me on the lower strings so I'd prefer less of a scallop on the bass side.

IMO scalloping was really needed in the 70's and before when we didn't have huge jumbo frets. 6100 and 6000 frets come very close to the scalloped feel

Dunno. I don't like 6150 and 6100 frets. I like 6105 (narrow but tall) and I like low and wide.

                    The scallop is different.

No, this is an Ibanez Roadstar II neck that I had scalloped and refretted a couple years ago.

Unfortunately the fretting job was as bad as the scallop job is good. I dressed the frets recently but still didn't get to play it yet. I also picked too large frets. 6100 and scallop is just too much. I don't even like 6100 frets normally.

Cool! Is there a scallop-service that you can recommend? I hear there's a guy over at Ebay that offers scalloping services, he has almost 100% positive feedback...

But I found these guys that I'm willing to try:

But if you look at their Blackmore scallop in the pics, the pattern is not 100% correct and it is too deep and a bit too radical.
I emailed the owner and he said it's just the way his clients prefer it but he said he also has a '97 MIJ Blackmore Strat that he can replicate the scallops 100%.

I had the scallop in my pictures done by some Puerto Rican guy on Ebay. He offered scallop and refret at the same time for IIRC $100 including material. The scallop is great and the fretwork was unusable. Kinda OK since the scallop job alone is worth $100 and since I picked too large frets anyway. But I'd certainly not let him mess with the frets. I think I can dig out more info, but it was a couple years ago.
