  • Favorite boutique guitar builder? Lets make a list!

    rules:

-High end builders... I mean one man, one shop (roughly). Companies like Suhr, Anderson, GMW, do not count. I do not doubt they make wonderful stuff, but this is a list of builders who completely build an entire guitar by him/herself.

I love Mike Lipe and the guitar he made that I bought. He built 20 guitars for Satriani and the original JEM 20th for Vai, hs also worked with Timmons, Santana, Kotson, and any other Ibanez artist from early 90s.

I also really like Chris Stambaughs work. While I am not the biggest fan of his finish work, his craftsmanship and quality is awesome and he can make you anything. He only does oil finishes but can contract others easily.

    Who do you dig?

Martyn Booth makes some sweet guitars, he started at Gibson and later worked with Yamaha but he's independent now. His main shape is a refined version of the solid 335 and it's a sweet thing. The price is affordable but not cheep priced about the same as a PRS or a Gibson.

that's nuts to charge 7k for a custom build.

Not if you think about it. The Fender Custom Shop will charge you the same price for a Master Built Relic 52 Tele. But how much of that is custom? You choose the fret height, fretboard radius, and color of the hardware. If you want additional features, it's extra.

But this guy is giving you pretty much full creative control over your instrument. I think it's a steal.

Which leads me to introducing my next builder. I introduce one of the few true custom guitar luthiers I know, and a very good friend of mine...

              SCOTT MACDONALD.

He's a great guy, friendliest one I've ever come around. Has a true passion for guitar and building, and like I said, is one of the very few truly custom builders I'm aware.

Check out his work at customguitars.com

See his works man, they are awesome!!
His price is around what Stinnett would charged you for a custom guitar.

You can either love or hate his designs, but nothing can be said 'bout him not building outstanding instruments:

Ladies and gentlemen, the "Thunder from Down Under", mr. Peter CROSSLEY!

That link goes to my favorite model; have a look at the whole site, it's exciting guitar p0rn.

I'm pretty sure he's a lot more affordable than most other luthiers mentioned here...

Our very own Peter Crossley does make some awesome stuff. Same with Equator here. But I don't think too many folks have put their mitts on any of these to find out what we're missing.

Wish I could just try some of their guitars.

I was thinking Peter deserved a mention. I would love to play one of his creations someday. Never having handled one, all I can say is that he has, IMO, one of the most refreshingly original guitar designs out there today. Original and beautiful is rare. I always look forward to seeing all the Crossley guitar porn.
