  • Early seventies guitar options

It's my 40th birthday next year and it I have let it be known that all I want is a guitar, no other presents required.
I'm not sure how achievable this will be, but it makes sense in my tiny brain.
It just dawned on me that a guitar made in the year of my birth would be even better. Now this really is non achievable. Gibson, Fenders etc from that time were not the best examples and also fetch more cash than I think they're worth.
Non of the big Jap names had really got up and running by '71 but there must have been other makers around back then, I just can't think of many at the moment.

Framus were making some okay stuff although it isn't that common to come across it. Guild had the S70 which is like a cross between a Strat and a PRS Mira. Odd ones you have the Travis Bean with the Aluminum neck and the Ampeg Dan Armstrong. Burns was making some ugly guitars (well I think they are ugly) and the early 70's Les Paul Delux's were not that bad.
Maybe a 40 year old Martin might be the way to go?

Same situation for me!! It'll be my 40th next year, and I want something a little special to commemorate the fact. I've pretty much given up on getting something from 71, so will probably aim for something new and shiny!

        Hey Birthday boyz!

If I were you, I'd get a really nice Late 70s/early '80s Jap guitar and forget about the year it was made... but if you still feel you MUST have a guitar made in the same year you were born, IIRC, Heritage, Guild, Gretsch and maybe Hamer were making excellent instruments 'round that time.

        Check'em out!

I've heard very good things about the guitars that Hagstrom were putting out around that time. Plus, they don't seem to go for absolutely ridiculous prices on the used market.

And they're sexy as all hell.

Something else to look for would be an Ovation Breadwinner.

That's probably the way I'll go as well.

Travis Bean with the Aluminum neck later teamed up with Kramer, and the Ampeg Dan Armstrong. Great stuff!

How about an amp from the year of your birth, instead?
