  • ash hollowbody?

i have aquired some ash and plan on making a guitar. my original plan was to hollow-out the wood (maybe leave or add a center block, my plans aren't final lol) and cover with a maple top.

Ash wasn't my first choice of woods for this project but should i bother making a hollowbody with a maple top or should i just make a solid tele? also i was thinking of a set mahogany neck but now im not so sure. what do you think guys?

what are the tele thinlines topped with?

our first drummer died in a bizzare gardening accident!

I won't dance in a club like this,
'Cause all the girls are sluts,
And the beer tastes just like piss.

All of the thinline Teles I've seen had a solid piece of ash for the treble side of the body. The hollow part was a 2nd piece, routed out, then with another piece of ash for the top and glued to the first piece on the bass side of the neck.

Your original plan sounds like a 'chambered' Gibson.

Making your own guitar - that's very ambitious! Good Luck.

I have a Warmoth thinline tele that's swamp ash with a swamp ash top. It's turned out to be a great guitar.

lol kinda, but i was thinking of it more of a solid hollow/semi hollow rather than a ply wood one.

I think hollowing it out is a great idea --- hit up TDPRI's "Tele Home Depot."

I learned everything I needed to know to get started over there.

Check out this thread for a good start: http://www.tdpri.com/forum/tele-home...e-build-2.html

If you search "Thinline" over there, you will find a lot of great, great threads, from "keep it simple" to "must be perfect in every way."

I figure I'd start you out on a preeb (Gil Yaron) thread, since he is a professional luthier and always has minimalistic and simple jigs and templates.

But yeah, definitely search "Thinline" over there.
