  • recommend me a good rotary tool

im planning on refinishing a tele, i originally finished it in tru oil but i dont like the look of it (just looks varnished and plain) so i want to strip it and stain it first, then refinish in tru oil.
i've been looking at the dremel multi rotary tools on ebay (i dont have a good hardware store close by so ebay is my best option)

i think i could use a rotary tool for 1000 jobs to do with a guitar including a drum sander bit for the horns and sides.

my question is, is the dremel 300 (hobby version) worth getting? or should i save up and get a dremel 4000? or are there any good cheaper alternatives?

Get a Dremmel 300 at least.
    There still made in America.
AND you can call them up to ask what attachements to use for certain jobs.
they have a full DVD showing you how to do different prijects and which tools and attachments to use.

On a different aspect of your post .... to remove Tru-oil, use acetone.

I am going to be doing kinda the reverse of what you will be doing .... I stained a guitar then Tru-oiled it. The more coats of oil i used, the more the stained coulour changed, so i'm going to be taking it all off and just have a couple of thin coats of oil. Like you, i thought i'd sand it off, but research told me to use acetone. However, it is probably best to wear rubber gloves and work outside. My thoughts are to work the acetone onto the finish with steel wool. It will be messy, but quick. Keep in mind that acetone evapourates pretty quickly.

The only difference between the 4000 and the 300 is you can't attached a planer or the jigsaw attachments. other than that they are the same.

I was looking into a good one after I finished doing this with a chinesse POS tool.

I am going to get the 300
