well, it's not the same.. the cab/head will give you a lot more OOMPH plus you can get some sweet speaker combos in a 4x12 cab.

about the amp.. try scoring a mesa mark4 combo on ebay.

                  Re: Amp for 1000$

try out a mesa single rectifier, preferably the old two channel ones. when mesa went with the three channel design, the amps lost something. i tried the dual and triple, but the single felt like it had more bottom end. the single lacks the headroom of the duals and triples, but that's why they make mikes and p.a.'s. i have a peavey 5150 thats been modded so that the mid frequency has been shifted down. i'll come off it. lastly, if you have p.a., try a GNX 4. they're $600 and can do more than any single amp. i love mine.
                  stuff i use:
                  '98 prs custom 22
original 2channel mesa/boogie single rectifier solo head
                  marshall 1960 cab
a bunch of other crap not worth mentioning in light of these

                    Definitely get a head ...
                    Mesa's are okay.
Also look into a used VHT Pitbull, Marshall JCM800 is great for old school thrash tone, or Rivera Knucklehead
Why don't you take your little Cobra Kais and get outta here?!
