  • vipers and..(do you like though-body stringing?)

I was playing an ESP Viper today and it rocked my sock. I do have one question regarding them.

The difference between the viper-400 and the Viper-500 is the tune-o-matic versus the string-through bridge (respectively).

Is there an explanation as to why string-through is better?

Its claimed to create better sustain with the strings contacting the body. I dont know if it true or not. If it does, its probably a slight difference.

It does seem to create a bit more break angle at the bridge getting more tension. Again probably slight.

Id go for either. The only reason id prefer string through over a stop piece is if the stop wasnt lockable. I always hated dealing with the stop piece falling off during string changes.

My LTD M-15 is a string thru bridge and I do get more sustain with it.

Sustain is probably a little better, and it looks cool. More guitars should be string-thru.

So, how much guitar does it take to rock both socks? Or were you only wearing one?

String thru is usually more sustain and better resonance. Try to lsiten both guitars un-plugged. Put your ear against the back of the body and strum a few cords on both guitars. You should hear some difference.

It said something else before I changed it to "sock".

I'm no scientist, and my guitars have more differences than just the stoptail vs. string through of course...however, it seems to me that my schecter string through has incredible sustain and other non-string throughs I've owned/played seem to significantly lose power after the initial attack. There is such an incredible difference in fact that I wonder why string through isn't just a flat out requirement for me, I think it will be in the future.

I've got a string thru SZ Ibanez... it's a staggered pattern, just looks really cool...
The angle is not extreme, but the tension is just right... The best $5@@ guitar I've ever owned w/hsc.
