    Re: Refinishing a guitar

Firat of all - regarding the neck. What a bunch of pusses; use some fricken tape. Jeez.

However - I am in agreement that:
    a) Don't refin this
    b) Pure white may not be a great first choice

I have never repainted a guitar, but I used to build a lot of models as a kid/young adult. Clean white is NOT the easiest thing to do right.

But do a search in the guitar room for Dominus posts. You'll find "His current method"

Correct. The blood spatter ones cover my mistakes on the white ones. Now the only pure white guitars I have are *stock* white.

Is there a little bit of white overspray in that middle black patch? You need to touch that up...

            Re: Refinishing a guitar

Quick question to the experienced refinishers: why is white hard?

I am planning to do a white finish on my home build (see sig), but not a glossy or candy coat - more of an open grained finish like this:

Threadstarter, a suggestion, if I may. that stringed op looks awesome, but if you're really set on repainting it, why not tape off the top, and just paint the back and sides? Or, if you really want it painted, use a thinner paint on the top, allowing the wood to shine through, like a see-through burst on a flamed top.

                don't ****in do it man

the main reason that guitar is awesome is the fnish

and there are about 2 billion white Explorers out there

Jesse's remark about time better spent doing other things is dead-on...it took me a month to paint the Warmoth i built in high school...if you got a job at Wendy's and worked for a month you'd have enough to buy one of those Epiphone 84 Explorers brand new in a box.

your LTD is sweet...don't change it.

                  Re: Refinishing a guitar

I refinished my Les Paul Custom many years ago. I only did it for one reason- it was Alpine White- and when I sanded some of the paint away from the control cavity, I found it had a AAAAA flame maple knot- with a knot near the bridge that made the guitar a factory second, so Gibson painted it white instead.

It cost me a couple hundred in supplies and about 6 weeks of work. At the time I worked in a boatyard and was refinishing yachts, so doing a guitar was no big deal, but I wouldn't have the patience now.

The worst part of it is it takes months for most over the counter laquers or varnishes to cure, and for about a year after, until the finish totally cured, the guitar was noticeably darker and duller in tone
