  • need to find a stain that works with nitro

i'm building a jaguar/tele hybrid with a quilt top, and i need to find out what stain i can use with nitro. i'm planning on doing a black/teal color combo on the quilt between the different grains. i'm using the side of maple as natural binding PRS style. i'm doing a satin finish on the bubinga body and bubinga neck.

suggestions on stain type and brand?

Hand rub your stains in to the body, working is small areas.

Use Stew-mac's colortone liquid stains, diluted with alcohol of course.

A little stain goes a long way!

        here's the plank i have:

this is the effect i'm going for basically. i assume you lay the black, let it dry and steel-wool it off of the harder grains as it stays in the softer grains. then lay the color. right?

Do not use steel wool, use extra fine grain grit paper.

          It is available at Stew-Mac.

Steel wool will leave minute steel fibers that will ruin your finish.

Here is a photo of one that I did with a mixed of three different ColorTone stains and 16 coats of clear lacquer (Notice the depth of the finish)

i saw that one a few days ago. that's a killer finish. how long did it take to buff? and how long did you let it cure? is it nitro or poly?
