  • Kent...Good Recent Info From Teese About Inductor Comparisons

The question was based on which inductors sound the best in Teese's opinion...
The questions were for the "Halo" "Stack of dimes" "TDK 5103" AND Fasels of vintage years...Left out was the great #48 inductor and the Fulltone...The #48 I have in one of my 847s and it's a great inductor...

Lew has this same inductor in his early CryBaby wah...

    Hi,

"The halo and silver can were actually the same basic thing, just encased in a metal can. Not including the cans (which I've never taken apart), there were at least 7 different halo inductors, each with its own characteristics. As a whole, the halo inductors are fairly clean, clear, and true to the original guitar tone. Actual tonal response varied according to the different ferrite materials used. Most of them produced a rather thin, bland sound. The halo that I've reproduced is the one out of the 7 that I found to have that special something to the sound that the others didn't.

The stack (sod) is the richest in harmonics and my personal favorite. I have reproduced this inductor based on engineering files from Thomas as well as info from their old manufacturer.

The original Fasel inductor (various colored cases but the same inside) has a mid-range hump that I don't particularly care for, but that is all subjective. Not everything you read on the net about these old inductors is accurate.

The TDK 5103 is generally of lesser tone quality than any of the others, BUT they also had variances. I've heard some old Thomas 'babies with the 5103 that sounded really nice.

Which one is best? Beauty is all in the ear of the beholder"....

Here's what the vintage 48 inductor looks like....

And here's an original Vox Clyde McCoy Wah from 67 or 68 with the "Halo"
