Besides my Strats, I only have one three pup guitar...an SG Custom. I must be a pretty deep picker because that middle pup gets in the way...not much but a little.

Aside from the physical inconvenience of the middle pup, there is the tonal inconvenience.

I just don't see any tonal advantage to that middle pup and no matter how I have wired that thing it just doesn't get me any decent tones. Plus it's a pain in the neck to deal with, electrically (I've tried various ways to wire it but they are all pretty clumsy).

I'm ending up with the middle pup not wired at all, just the neck and bridge, typical 50's LP wiring. Leaving the middle pup in just for looks, but adjusting it low and out of the way of my pick.

Now that I've said that.....

Nice looking guitar.

Makes me remember my 1969 Gibby LP Custom, black with cream rings and gold metal. A real beaut.

It's currently wired so that the middle position is Neck / Bridge / Middle-out-of-phase with one knob operating as a volume/blend for the middle pickup.

I don't know if I'll like that sound or not but I don't use the middle-position on HH guitars much at all anyway so even if it gives me one useable sound in certain situations, I'm cool with it.

Anybody ever put a Sustainiac in the middle position?

For the record I do not hold myself above imports from Japan and I care more about specs than names... I wouldn't buy one of these new but a 30+-year-old used one? Sure.

That might be cool.

If it were mine, I'd wire it up as such:

Switch: neck, neck/bridge, bridge
Pot 1: neck vol
Pot 2: bridge vol
Pot 3: middle vol + push-pull that adds the middle to any position
Pot 4: master tone

This would give you stock LP behaviour in "default" mode, and a bunch of interesting tones in "middle on" mode. The three volume pots would allow you to blend the various pickups together into an ideal mix. You might find, for example, that neck + middle with the middle rolled off is a cool tone.

The only thing you wouldn't get that way is middle by itself, but IMO middle buckers on their own sound weird.

Nice work, Matt. Is the view looking at the pots from the top or the back? If from the back, then you drew it naturally for left-handed use. The ground and pickup hot should be reversed for right-handed. That is if I am looking at it right.
